FAQ

Q: How do I join the SMOA?
A: Go to the "Important Links" page on this web site and open the SMOA Membership Form. Complete the form and give it to one of our members or officers. You will be voted upon at the next General Meeting. The meeting schedule can be found under the Calendar page..

Q: Why would I want to join the SMOA?
A: All officials in Michigan are strongly encouraged to be a member of an approved association. Sports such as basketball and footbal require that you be a "member in good standing" in an approved association before you can receive playoff games. You can be a member in more than one association at a time.

Q: How do I register with the MHSAA?
A: Go to www.mhsaa.com and follow the "Officials" link to request registration materials.

Q: I'm registered, now how do I get games?
A: There are two ways games are contracted. Either directly by the athletic director or through an independent assigner. Some sports are almost entirely assigned, such as those in the Lakeland Conference.  The assigners for the Lakeland Conference can be found here. Other sports may be assigned at the varsity level only. Your best bet is to contact the assiger of your sport and discuss your situation with them. Other assigners in the area are as follows: Rod Terrill, Dave Behnam, and Jim Danhoff. These assigners handle conferences such as the St Joe Valley, Wolverine, SMAC, and KVA. Ask another SMOA member how to get in touch with these assigners.
Q: What does it mean to be a Member in Good Standing?
A: The requirements for the SMOA can be found here. Each association has its on set of rules so the SMOA rules might be different than the Fruitbelt Officials Association rules..
